  • Published Information
No. 8 "Bush tragedy" was published in Australian Photographic Journal, 20 March 1897 and the photographer was identified as Carl Ehlers of Grafton. He titled the photograph "Incident in Pioneer bush life".
  • General note

The inscription on the inside cover of the album indicates the photographs are by William Livermore, who was the manager of the * photo. [i.e. Star Photo. Co.], the trademark of which appears on 14 of the photoprints. Additionally, glass copy negatives of several of these images are held within the Star Photo. Co. collection of negatives (Location Number: ON 143 Mitchell Library). However, several photographs appear to be copies and at least one (Collection of Aboriginals, 1890 [p.22]) is known to be by Alfred Butler of Grafton.
The titles penned beneath the photoprints in the album are in a later hand and show many inconsistencies. For instance, p.1 King Billy (La Perouse 1906) appears on p.21 Yamba Heads, Clarence River 1890 with a woman [his wife?], who also appears at p.17 as being at Byron Bay 1890. Examination of the man's breastplate on the copy negative identifies him as being `Robert, King of Gumbathagang Paddy Gully Oban and Metake'. The album was purchased from Livermore in 1926 and the titles may date from that time, being recollections by him. As such the titles should be treated with care -- Curator of Photographs, Mitchell Library, 1996
