W. J. A. (Wilfred Joseph Allan) Allsop, clerk, of Mosman, Sydney was born in Flemington, Melbourne, 11 April 1893. He enlisted at Liverpool aged 22, 12 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT SS Ascanius A11, 10 Oct. 1915. He was a stretcher bearer and despatch rider for the 8th Australian Field Ambulance, serving in Egypt and France. He returned to Australia on the Sardinia, 19 April 1919. He died on the 9 November 1956. - Scope and ContentMLMSS 9648

“Photo of ‘A’ Section Australian Field Ambulance. Taken somewhere in France, September 1917. I ride both the Douglas and the ‘Triumph’ Cycles. The other chap being Spare Despatch Rider. Bradley, who face is marked with the white blot, was killed yesterday 21/9/17. W.J.A. Allsop” – inscribed on verso.

3. Group portrait of men dressed as clowns.
“Our concert party trading as ‘The Nightbirds’ who have been running concerts periodically for 12 months. Photo taken somewhere in France, September 1917. I don’t know who the artist is who put the other marks on this card”. “Les oiseaux de nuit 10.9.17”. – inscribed on verso.
