    Drawings - 8 miniature watercolour portraits on ivory, each encased in gold framed lockets (five of which have a lock of hair entwined in the back of the frames) - in oval mount 42.5 x 29 cm.
  • Scope and Content
    The set includes Governor Macquarie (middle left); his second wife Elizabeth (middle right); their son Lachlan (top right); Henrietta Arabella Meredith, a 'life-long friend' of Mrs Macquarie (centre); and possibly Jane Jarvis, the Governor's first wife (centre top).

  • General note

    Two gold coloured metal plaques attached to the centre of the mount briefly relate the history of Lachlan Macquarie and his son.
    Three of the sitters are identified as: "Gen. Macquarie", "Mrs. Macquarie", and "Lachlan Macquarie". A fourth has a non-contemporaneous label in blue biro that reads, "Henrietta A[?]abella Meredith. Aged 4 years. Life long friend of Mrs. Macquarie."
    The portraits of Governor Macquarie and his wife bear a close resemblance to other miniatures held in the Mitchell Library - see MIN 71, MIN 236, and MIN 70 and MIN 237 respectively.
