  James Richard Hill (1836-1898), banker & financier, was a tenant of Vaucluse House after the Wentworth family left in March 1883 until his death in 1898. Nephew of Sir Daniel Cooper, he was in charge of the Wentworth and Cooper estates.

  The name "Gilbey" (or "Gilbie") refers to Theophilus Gilberthorpe, a servant at Vaucluse House. "No account of Vaucluse House, however, would be complete without reference to Theophilus Gilbertthorpe [ie. Gilberthorpe], who was a much thought-of servant of the Wentworth family. "Gilbie," as he was familiarly called, was born on the Hawkesbury River. His father and mother [Thomas and Mary] came out with Governor Phillip in the Sirius, and started farming on the Hawkesbury River, but financial disaster overtook them, and Gilbie, who was always fond of the sea, came to Sydney, and started fishing for a living. He often got an odd job at the home of Mr. W. C. Wentworth, who proved a friend to him. Finally, Gilbie went to live with the family, as one of their trusted servants, and he remained with them until death overtook him in 1904, but not before he had reached nearly 100 years of age. He was buried at the South Head Cemetery overlooking the sea. Members of the family and fellow-servants alike paid their last respects to "Gilbie," and a very neat headstone and a well-kept grave mark the spot where he now lies." -- Reference: Mitchell Library newcuttings: Watson, J.H. - Papers re Rose Bay, Vaucluse and Watson's Bay, p.13.
