    Drawings - 126 drawings (pencil - watercolour) - 40 cm. x 74 cm. or smaller
  • Scope and Content
    The sketches are of places visited by the H.M.S. Rattlesnake including Albany, Cape York, Cul de Sac de L'Orangerie, Darnely, Dufaure and Prince of Wales' Islands, and the coast of New Guinea. The drawings feature objects of Indigenous material culture such as carvings, implements, and personal ornamentation, as well as aspects of Indigenous knowledge systems, modes of food production, and the construction of canoes and dwellings

  • General note

    Bruinie Island [i.e. Brunai Island], later known as Mbrunai Island or Mbuke Island, Papua New Guinea, is part of the Admiralty Island Group.

    The sketches have detailed remarks about nautical direction, weather conditions, events, and colours. Some text appears in an indigenous language recorded with the English equivalent.
    Some sheets are folded in half.
    In cases where sketches have an additional drawing on the reverse, the letters a & b (plus c & d where sheets are four-sided) have been allocated.
    Many drawings have a paper label with an auction number on the reverse.
    The sheet with drawing Nos. 2a-2c is folded in half and has 3 sketches.
    The paper used for sketches Nos. 4, 5, 10, 11, 52, 78 bear watermark, "Moinier's Patent 1848".
    No.23 is drawn on cardboard.
    No.30 has a piece missing from the lower left-hand corner.
    Sketch No. 38b appears to be an earlier version of No.40.
    Nos. 38 & 47 are torn.
