Norman Brierley, a farmer of Brisbane, Queensland was born in Annandale, New South Wales. He enlisted in Brisbane 15 Dec. 1917 aged 21 and embarked from Sydney on board RMS Ormonde, 2 March 1918. He served as a private with the 31st Battalion in France. After the armistice he travelled throughout France as batman to Lieutenant Hix - Scope and ContentLetters (23) to his brother Herbert and sister-in-law Jess, describing a voyage to Egypt on the Ormonde, and from Egypt to Marseilles on the Indarra May 1918, torpedoing of the Leicester Castle, training at Codford camp, trench warfare in France Sep. - Nov. 1918, travels in France as batman to Lieutenant Hix and return to Australia on H.M.A.S. Port Melbourne Aug. 1919
