  • Collection history
In 1878 Mordaunt William Shipley Clarke, son of Reverent William Branwhite Clarke, sold a collection of his father's scientific records including notes, specimens, maps etc ... and library of geological works to the New South Wales. Department of Mins for 7,000pds. This material was stored in the newly erected Garden Palace which was located near Government House. The Garden Palace had been built specifically to house the Sydney International Exhibition, 1879-1880, after which it was used for concerts and storage of government records. however, in 1882 the building was destroyed by fire and with it the scientific records of the Rev. W. B. Clarke which had been purchased in 1878. In 1929, 1935 and 1948 the Library acquired some papers of Reverend W. B. Clarke from his grandson, W.B. Clarke. Further transfers were concluded between 1944-1961 with other members of the family, Lindsay Clarke and Barbara Chapman nee Clarke. Owing to the nature of their separate transfers to the Library, the apers were accessioned and catalogued as different collections. As they share the same provenance these papers have now been brought together and are all filed at MLMSS 139. Previous location numbers: MLMSS 141, MLMSS 368, MLMSS 454, MLMSS 490, MLDOC 1395, C 130, B 57, Ac 63
