    Gerald Archibald Balme, insurance inspector of Geelong, Victoria embarked on HMAT A16 Port Melbourne 21 Oct. 1916 and fought with the 29th Battalion, 10th Reinforcement in France and Belgium. He was gassed 18 Mar. 1918 and admitted to the County of Middlesex War Hospital, St. Albans. He attended Senior Officers School, Aldershot July-Aug. 1918 and returned to Australia on the Port Melbourne 5 July 1919

    Letter to his wife from England, 29 Apr. 1918 enclosing MS. transcript of his shorthand diary kept as the sergeant of a working party on Messines Ridge, Belgium, 15 Nov. - 18 Dec. 1917
