  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Abel Janszoon Tasman was instructed to command expeditions to the southern and eastern seas in 1642-43 and 1644 by Anthony van Diemen, Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. On his first voyage to find new markets, travelling in the ships Heemskerck and Zeehaen, Tasman charted Tasmania, the west coast of New Zealand, the Tonga and Fiji island groups, and the north coast of New Guinea. On his second voyage, travelling in the Limmen, Braacq and Zeemeuw, Tasman charted the south west coast of New Guinea and much of Australia's previously unknown coastline.
The full journal of the first voyage was lost, but two abridged versions survived. The Huijdecoper manuscript, one of these versions, is an extract copy.
The journal includes two manuscript charts and a rare printed map by Hessel Gerritsz. Six coastal drawings of land sighted on 4 and 5 December 1642 are inserted in the volume.
The journal of the second voyage was also lost. No copies are known to exist. -- from Curator's essay, `In search of rich lands', Nelson Meers Foundation Heritage Collection catalogue (2003).
The Huijdecoper journal is written in a clerk's hand, with annotations possibly in the hand of Isaac Gilsemans, the merchant aboard Tasman's ship the Zeehaen.

Previously in the possession of the Huijdecoper van Maarseveen en Nigtevecht family. Select pages from this item have been digitised as part of the Nelson Meers Foundation Benefaction, 2002.
  • Scope and Content
The Huijdecoper journal is an extract of the journal, now no longer in existence, kept by Abel Tasman during the voyage 1642-1643. It Includes:

1618, updated to 1628; [Chart of the Malay Archipelago and the Dutch discoveries in Australia] / bij Hessel Gerritsz. met Octroy van de H.M. Heeren de Staten generael der Vereenichde Neerlanden. de Staten generael der Vereenichde Neerlanden. One hand coloured map (51 x 33 cm), bound in to Huijdecoper journal. The discoveries after 1618 were added to the engraved plate between 1628 ("G.F. de Wits landt, ontdeckt Ao. 1628") and 1632, as Gerritsz ceased to be the Cartographer in Ordinary to the Dutch East Indies Company on 3 January 1633. One of only three copies extant.

1643; `Ontworp gedaen door Franchoijs Jacobsen Stierman de naemen gestelt naer ordre Vanden Commandr tasman' being manuscript chart (36.5 x 33 cm) by Franchoijs Jacobsen Visscher, chief pilot, on Tasman's 1642-43 expedition. Shows the track of the Heemskerck and Zeehaen between 19 January and 7 February 1643.

1643; `Staeten lant beseijlt en ondtect anno 1642 den 13 Decem.r met Het Jacht heemskerck en de zeehaen, ende met groot vlijt seer naerstich ontworpen door Franchoijs Jacobse, stierman' being Manuscript chart (45.5 x 35 cm) depicting Tasman's navigation along the northwest of New Zealand's South Island, past Cape Farewell, into Cook Strait, and along part of the west coast of North Island between 15 December 1642 and 6 January 1643. With north at the bottom, this chart also shows the opening at Queen Charlotte Sound [Zeehaen Bay] which is closed in the Nationaal Archief journal version. Schilder doubts that Tasman's Dutch pilot Frans Jacobszoon Visscher actually drew this copy of the `oldest extant representation of New Zealand'. Both Vingboons (1665) and Valentijn (1726) issued their edition of this chart.
