• General note
  
  William Light was appointed to Surveyor-General for South Australia in 1836. His main task was to select and survey a suitable area for the establishment of the new settlement Adelaide. He sailed to South Australia in the 'Rapid' on May 1, 1836 and the survey was completed by March 1837. He also used his considerable skills as an artist to record the scene as a small cluster of tents.
