Dr Andrew McNaughtan (1953-2003) was born in Sydney the son of June Gram a dedicated environmentalist. He studied at Sydney Grammar School then trained as a welder and raced cross-country motorcycles. He enrolled at the University of New South Wales and graduated in Medicine in 1983.
After spending a year as a volunteer doctor in Nicaragua he moved to the Northern Territory becoming involved with the East Timorese community and campaigned to end Indonesian occupation. He worked tirelessly as an activist for human rights in East Timor, providing financial sponsorship, volunteering his medical services and raising political awareness in Australia through filming demonstrations, collecting evidence of Indonesia's military involvement and forming a committee to advocate apportioning of East Timor's oil and gas revenues to the Timorese -- Age, p. 7 (Jan. 2 2004); SMH, p.38 (Jan. 12 2004).
