  • Scope and Content
    Tony Maniaty papers, ca. 1963-ca. 1990, including Maniaty’s literary, journalism, photographic, sound, and personal archives. Literary papers consist of Maniaty’s complete literary output from 1963 to 1990. It includes hand written and typed manuscripts of all his stories and novels, and all accompanying research and correspondence. Journalism papers include Maniaty’s magazine work, radio cassette tapes, book reviews and newspaper articles. Photographs include many of Australia’s news writers and recognized authors, and visiting overseas writers. Also includes photography of inner-urban and beach life ca. 1976-ca. 1989.

    Sound recordings include Maniaty’s extensive interviews with many of Australia’s leading and emerging authors in the 1980’s. Also includes Maniaty’s own journalistic recordings as a radio news, current affairs and features reporter. Tony Maniaty’s personal papers include his literary and private correspondence, memorabilia and printed ephemera.

    A significant part of the collection relates to Tony Maniaty’s ABC reportage from East Timor during the Indonesian invasion in 1975. He was shelled in Balibo, where several days later, five of his Australian colleagues were killed. Papers include factual notes, personal diaries and photography, sound recordings of interviews with Fretilin leadership, and telexed news reports.

    Box 1 includes a floppy disk and printout containing a box list compiled by Maniaty for the 22 boxes received at acquisition. The collection was subsequently rehoused into 55 boxes.
