• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  For Christmas 1915 the Australian War Contingent Association in London produced and distributed to each Australian soldier a Christmas gift tin. Private John Archibald Douglas Sommers, artist and author of Melbourne, Victoria, served with the 1st Division, Australian Army Service Corps in Egypt, Gallipoli and France.

• Scope and Content
  Rectangular gold painted tin with hinged lid. The lid is printed in black with the Australian coat of arms with the dates '1915' and '1916' on either side. Beneath this are the words 'To our gallant Australian kinsmen at the Front from the Australian War Contingent Association, London. With every good wish to one and all Xmas 1915'. On the inside of the lid is a painting in oil inscribed 'Sangars' and on the inside of the base is a painting in oil inscribed 'Bir Shola'.
