    Unsigned and undated, identified after comparison with the portrait lithograph by Thomas Fairland from the painting by A.C. Hayter, published London September 1, 1852 (ML DG P3/1), and the entry for Angelo Collen Hayter in Graves, Algernon - The Royal Academy of Arts: a complete dictionary of contributors and their work from its foundation in 1769 to 1904, London 1906 (GRL Ref. Q703/5 p. 45) which lists for 1852 '430 Mrs. Caroline Chisholm, the philanthropic orginator of the Family Colonization Loan Society'.

    Attached to tbe back of the canvas were the remnants of three exhibition labels, one of which (for the exhibition of Arts Industries & Manufacturers, Exhibition Palace, Dublin 1872) gives the artists name as 'Sir George Hayter and the owner's name as 'E. Dwyer - Gray', Dwyer - Gray was the married name of the sitter's elder daughter, Caroline Agnes (A.D.B. v.8, 1891-1939 pages 390-391 (ML Ref. books 920.094/7). The portrait is referred to in M. Kiddle's Caroline Chisholm Penrith, 1972 (ML Ref. A923.6/C542/3D1, p. 162). The labels are filed at PXn 633.
