    William Daniel Hardy, a junior railway porter of Thirroul, New South Wales was born in Bathurst and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces on 9 Oct. 1915 at the age of nineteen. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A61 Kanowna, 29 March 1916 and served in the 4th Field Ambulance of the Army Medical Corps in Egypt, France and Belgium. He transferred to the Second Australian General Hospital 24 Feb. 1917. He was invalided back to Australia on HMAT A29 Suevic, arriving in Sydney 20 Nov. 1917
