    John Joyce, storekeeper of Hawthorne, Victoria was born in Armagh, Ireland. He enlisted aged 28 on 27 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A71 Nestor, 11 Oct. 1915. He served with the 7th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces in northern France and Belgium. He was promoted to lance-corporal on 2 Aug. 1916, was wounded in action on 17 Aug. 1916, invalided from France to England on 21 Aug. 1916 and returned to Melbourne on HMAT Miltiades, 2 June 1917
