    Private Claude Stanley Smith, a manufacturer's agent of Petersham, New South Wales, was born in Newcastle. He enlisted 24 Aug. 1914 aged 28, and embarked on board Transport A19 Afric with the First Expeditionary Force from Sydney on 18 Oct. 1914. He served in Gallipoli with 1st Infantry Brigade, 26 Apr. 1915, was wounded on 9 Aug. 1915, and hospitalised with influenza in England. He married Marjorie Knaggs, Apr. 1917 and returned to Australia on the Balmoral Castle, 2 Dec. 1918
