ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Private Wesley Paul Choat, a farm labourer of Clarence Park, South Australia was 19 years when he enlisted with his brothers Archibald and Raymond Choat on 30 June 1915 in Adelaide. He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A2 Geelong, 18 Nov. 1915, trained in Egypt and went to France in 1916 with the 32nd Battalion. Raymond and Archibald were killed in action 20 July 1916 at Fromelles and Wesley was taken prisoner on the same day. He was a prisoner of war until Oct. 1917 when he escaped and walked out through Holland, taking 5 weeks to reach England. He returned to Australia on HT Gaika 5 July 1918
Scope and Content
Describes his experiences in prison camps at Lille, Dulmen, Strafe, Munster II and Dusseldorf and his escape. The narrative, originally titled 'A bold bid for Blighty', was written during his journey back to Australia
