  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1866, Arthur Orton, an English immigrant working as a butcher in Wagga Wagga, N.S.W., sailed for England in response to advertisements for Roger Charles Tichborne, heir to a baronetry and estates in Hampshire, who had been presumed lost at sea. Tichborne's mother, on meeting Orton, recognized him as her son an gave him an allowance. The younger brother, however, held the estates until his death, when they were held for his infant son. Lady Tichborne died in 1868, and Orton sued for the return of the estates. The trustees denied that Orton was Tichborne, and the resulting case lasted from May 1871 to March 1872, when Orton was suited and arrested for perjury. On 28 February 1874, he was sentenced to 14 years penal servitude, he was freed in 1884 and died 1 April 1898. His counsel Dr E. V. Kenealy was severly castigated. The papers are thought to have been brought together by Dr. Kenealy
