    Ephemera - 1 printed broadside, with two wood-cuts and letterpress - 30.9 x 21 cm
  • General note

The broadside has two woodcuts. The left-hand image is of three buildings by water, and is probably supposed to represent Botany Bay. The right hand image is of a monster guarded by two men with guns. It matches closely the description of the wild man given in the letterpress of the broadside, and was probably cut especially for the broadside.
There is no evidence that a ship Rover visited Australia in 1789
The broadside was auctioned by Sotheby's on 25 June 1992 in the Longueville Collection, lot 113. In 1995 it was offered by Tim McCormick as no.14 of his Australiana Rare and Curious catalogue.
Another version of the broadside is held by the Dixson Library, Drawer Item 140. It only has one woodcut, of a woman? titled Hoko, but the text is largely the same. However this text says the Rover arrived in Plymouth on 24 April 1790.

A long narrative about the capture of the giant, by the crew of the Ship Rover, under Captain Lee, is printed beneath the two woodcuts. The text says the Rover landed at Plymouth, 29 November 1789.
